2042

The pageview statistics leapt suddenly beyond the ability to do any more historical posts - at least for the AD timeline.

In this last post I thought I might speculate about the future. What might happen in 29 years' time? As my interests tend more towards fantasy fiction than science fiction, I am not as familiar with this sort of speculation - so expect it to lack a scientific edge! I would love to hear your thoughts as well!

I may have a wedding to attend - for a niece or nephew. Or celebrate the birth of a great niece or nephew - making me feel old in anticipation! They are all under three years old at the moment!

I have a few friends who write and hope to publish novels (and some who already have published) - so one of them could potentially win the Nobel Prize for Literature! That would be great!

There will be a king on the throne of England - possibly William V or maybe even George VII (I doubt that Charles will still be alive, but who knows? It could be Charles III). There may even be a royal wedding for Prince George! I wonder how many of the other monarchies of the world will remain in place by this point in time?

Concerned island nations may encourage their populations to build boats able to carry them huge distances as the water levels rise, swallowing arable land and dwellings, ready to flee to any and every country who will take pity on them. Or the leaders will embezzle frightening amounts of money in order to flee before the situation becomes dire, leaving their people to fend for themselves.

Home and Away and Neighbours have been stripped of their PG ratings, and been banned in several countries because of their terrible plot lines. But they are still on air... And Doctor Who are up to their 21st Doctor, maybe even with David Tennant's daughter playing the role of companion.

Several nations have space programs, and are in a race to send the first team to colonise either Mars or the Moon. A coalition of tiny countries with a small budget but great ingenuity surprise everyone and beat the USA.

Bollywood will release several films for an American audience, to the fury of some and the delight of most average filmgoers. They will outsell the latest expensive blockbuster from Hollywood, and may even win a few Golden Globes and Oscars... unless rules have been introduced to prevent them from being nominated.

Great Britain win Eurovision, to their own huge surprise.

And in the realm of already published fiction which is set in 2042:
  • Moscow 2042 (published in 1986) by Vladimir Voinovich, which looks at what Soviet Communism might have developed into, and considers what will happen when it fails.
  • The Plot to Save Socrates (published in 2006) by Paul Levinson, which treats the topic of time travel.
So come on, tell me your crazy (or reasonable) theories about 2042. Will all technology be voice activated? Will we have computer chips implanted into our brains in the hospital within weeks of our births? Will there be any supercountries, for example the European Union being a country instead of a group of countries? Will cars be able to fly? Will the human race be engaged in World War Three? Will we have destroyed ourselves in a nuclear war?
